Bring A Stray Cat Inside and What Precautions to Take

You might have noticed a friendly cat in your neighborhood. A friendly cat is known as a stray cat who loves to socialize with humans. They are either lost or abandoned outdoors. You find them very appealing and want to pet them, play with them, and dish them food. If you are thinking about letting a stray cat inside, few things are essential to keep in mind.

If the Cat Is Stray or Not?

Firstly, you have to determine if the cat you want to adopt is stray or not because not all cats are homeless. Some are feral (unfriendly or wild).

  1. Ask around about the cat.
  2. Post a notice online, such as on Facebook.
  3. Post a message on an online platform or message the pet rescue groups such as Missing Pet Network.

If you get no response and the cat interacts with you. It means it is a stray cat, and you can legally adopt it without any doubt.

Things to Do When Adopting A Stray Cat

1-Integrate slowly

Stray cats like to stalk. They want to steal food and disappear whenever they like. Make sure to adjust them to vet- recommended feet and all the essentials a cat need. Donโ€™t force anything on the cat as it might be difficult for them to adjust.

2-Visit the veterinarian

As the stray cats live outdoors and bringing them inside is a bit dangerous, they might have fleas and ticks. They can have diseases and parasites too, which can be contagious. Visit the vet and get a thorough check-up to be sure that the cat is clean and healthy. Get them spayed or neutered. Question the vet about the lifestyle and potential hazards about them.

3-Approach them with care and alertness

Please donโ€™t start to pet them immediately as they might be aggressive. Let me trust you. To make the cat trust you, make eye contact and blink slowly. Talk to them in a polite tone. Give them space and let them explore. Please provide them with cat food and all the essentials they need. Gradually the cat will start to trust you, and they will get comfortable near you. Now is the right time to pet them.
