When Do Kitten Start Teething?

Teething is a natural phase of growth that every kitten goes through. If you find that your cat/kitten has started chewing on things, that means your kitten is teething. Some kittens find it discomforting, while others are confident and brave about it. The kitten teeth are also known as milk teeth or deciduous teeth. In contrast, the cats go through 2 sets of teething while growing.

The Age Timeline of Kitten Teething

The first baby teeth kittens have, which is when they are 3 to 4 weeks. According to the pet health network, the incisors and primary canines come first. These milk teeth fall at the age of 3 to 4 months, and cats welcome their adult teeth pop-ups. It takes the kittens about a period of 6 months to adjust while everything comes in place. There is a total of 26 to 30 adult teeth.

Dr. Eldredge says that deciduous teeth fall around three months of age, and adult teeth grow.

What Are the Signs of Kitten Teething?

Most kittens feel discomfort and trouble, according to Dr. Eldredge. such as

1-Change in appetite:

Kittens and cats will start chewing slowly or being reluctant to eat.

2-Redness and swelling in gums:

Gums can become tender during the eruption of the adult tooth. Do visit the vet as it might be gingivitis or periodontal disease.

3-Resist playtime:

Due to their sore mouth, they hesitant to play as they put the toys in their mouth and rub them to their gums.

4-Unusual meowing:

Due to discomfort, kittens meow more than usual.

5-Excessive drooling:

Always check the kitten because they will be heavily drooling from teething. Something can be stuck in a kittenโ€™s mouth, which can cause the mouth injury

6-Retained teeth:

The kittens can have a retained deciduous tooth, and two teeth can form on each other. Both the baby teeth and adult teeth can come in one spot. Visit the vet and get your cat checked up as soon as possible.

These few things can help your kitten to smooth the pain and sore mouth.

1. Soft food: Soft the canned food or give them a diet that is easily swallowed with warm water.

2. Play sessions: play with them, provide them with adequate time to keep them busy, and make them feel lonely.

3. Toys: provide them with unique toys to chew and reduce irritation.

4. Make them low sodium ice cubes of chicken broth to play. It will smooth the gums. It is very effective during the summers.
